Mesothelioma Information On The Internet

Internet sources of information that is widely used for patients with mesothelioma. The objective of this study was to assess the content and quality of mesothelioma information presented on the internet using Google as a search engine, and to test the hypothesis that more popular sites (for example, a higher Google ranking) of high quality. Methods: The top 100 websites appear in Google using the term "mesothelioma" has been included in the study. Sites that are evaluated by using (a) JAMA benchmarks (authorship, references, currency, and disclosure), and (b) the information score (IS) given website points (0-100) for specific information about various aspects of mesothelioma . RESULTS: From the top 100 websites identified, 84 websites matched for scoring. Only 5 (6.0%) of all sites that meet the criteria 4 of JAMA benchmarks. Which means that the IS was 23.8 (range, 0-86). There is a weak but significant positive correlation with the Google Web site ranking and IS (r = 0,275, p = 0006). CONCLUSIONS: There is marked variation in the quality, integrity and currency of the information on the education website for mesothelioma patients. Google has been ranking indicates a weak but significant positive correlation to the quality of medical information associated with mesothelioma.
