I have decided to take a look at ING Direct in the USA as a great example of a direct banking entity that has leveraged the electronic banking environment to gain a strong foothold in the US financial services industry.

ING Group is a global bank that started in the Netherlands and has grown tremendously since it’s inception in 1990 as a dominant player in the world direct banking industry. More specifically, ING Direct USA started in 2000 and is a subsidiary of the parent company ING Group.

What has distinguished ING Direct from the traditional banking model is their use of the online platform made by a strategic partner called e-Profile to deliver tremendous value to its customers. Although, it would seem that I am advocating against my own job due to the online platform, there is still a need for the physical branch banking model which has a footprint in the local community. ING does not offer physical branches to reduce their overhead costs tremendously. Instead, they operate through major call center and back office functions scattered around the country and even in the homes of some employees to deliver the phone banking needs of its customers. In the United States, liability insurance covers claims against the policy holder and generally, any other operator of the insured’s vehicle, provided they do not live at the same address as the policy holder and are not specifically excluded on the policy. In the case of those living at the same address, they must specifically be covered on the policy. Thus it is necessary for example, when a family member comes of driving age they must be added on to the policy. Liability insurance generally does not protect the policy holder if they operate any vehicles other than their own. When you drive a vehicle owned by another party, you are covered under that party’s policy. Non-owners policies may be offered that would cover an insured on any vehicle they drive. This coverage is available only to those who do not own their own vehicle.

Generally, liability coverage does extend when you rent a car. However, in most cases only liability applies. Any additional coverage, such as comprehensive policies, i.e. “full coverage” may not apply. Full coverage premiums are based on, among other factors, the value of the insured’s vehicle. This coverage may not apply to rental cars because the insurance company does not want to assume responsibility for a claim greater than the value of the insured’s vehicle, assuming that a rental car may be worth more than the insured’s vehicle. Most rental car companies offer insurance to cover damage to the rental vehicle. These policies may be unnecessary for many customers as credit card companies, such as Visa and Mastercard, now provide supplemental collision damage coverage to rental cars if the transaction is processed using one of their cards. One may be able to get a second mortgage if one does not have much equity, but then the loan rates will be much higher, and the amount that one can borrow much lower. It will essentially be a waste of time and money.

The money that you are getting from a home equity loan can be used for almost anything that you want. If you need to make home repairs, buy a boat or a car, or pay off consolidate debt, just about anything you can think of. Be careful when applying and make sure that you can afford the monthly payments or you could jeopardize the ownership of your home.

While research is ongoing and our knowledge of the disease is definitely increasing faster than it ever has, doctors know an actual cure is still years away. However, large variabilities exist in many mesothelioma patients and there are people who have lived full lives after their diagnoses.
Mesothelioma Prognosis: Statistics

When mesothelioma is examined in purely statistical terms, the prognosis figures are discouraging. Pleural mesothelioma typically presents in an advanced stage of progression with a ten-to-fourteen month lifespan expectation from diagnosis. Peritoneal mesothelioma often presents with a slightly more optimistic lifespan expectation and patients surviving two to five years are not uncommon. However, after five years, statistics show survivability dropping to well below thirty percent.

Statistics, however, do not tell the whole story. There are a variety of factors in the development of a patient’s mesothelioma prognosis and subtle differences among these factors can have a dramatic impact on the course the disease will take. The statistical models used in mesothelioma often miss the extraordinary differences between a person’s stated prognosis/diagnosis and the way in which the disease actually impacts his or her life. While rare, it is not unknown for an individual to live for ten or sometimes even twenty years after a diagnosis of mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma Prognosis: Biology of the Disease

The most important disease-specific prognostic factors for patients with mesothelioma involve the form of mesothelioma as presented and the histological subtype of the presented disease. Of the two major forms of mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma generally presents with a worse prognosis than peritoneal mesothelioma does. The physiological reasons for this difference are not completely understood, but a major factor is the histological aspect of the cancer. Pleural mesothelioma presents about fifty percent of the time with an epitheloid histologic subtype, twenty percent of the time with sarcomatoid subtype and the remaining thirty percent is the biphasic subtype, which is a combination of the previous two subtypes. Peritoneal mesothelioma presents in the vast majority of diagnoses with the epitheloid subtype. This is significant because epitheloid mesothelioma responds more favorably to treatment than sarcomatoid mesothelioma or biphasic mesothelioma does. Thus, with the majority of peritoneal cases featuring the most treatable histological subtype, one would expect for it to have a better overall prognosis. Conversely, with only half of pleural cases involving the most treatable subtype, one would also expect a generally worse prognosis.
Mesothelioma Prognosis: Patient Status

Along with the biological aspects of mesothelioma as presented, another set of important prognostic factors includes the stage of the disease at diagnosis, the health of the patient and his or her age. All three will have a major impact on life expectancy and the future course of the disease.
Stage of the Disease

The stage of disease at diagnosis is a crucial factor in the development of the patient’s prognosis. As with all forms of cancer, early detection is important, but this is especially true of mesothelioma. Because mesothelioma generally resists curative treatment, doctors can manage the disease more efficiently if they have caught it in its early stages. The diffuse nature of the disorder means advanced tumor progression will invade large areas of tissue, making treatment even more difficult. Mesothelioma presents with symptoms shared by a number of other diseases and often goes undiagnosed because of these similarities. An early diagnosis is absolutely crucial if one hopes to control the disease.
Performance Status

Another important prognostic factor is the overall health of the person, with the patient’s age an important sub-factor in this determination. Generally, the healthier a patient presents, the better he or she will respond to cancer treatments and the better chances he or she has of longer survival. When grading a patient’s health, doctors develop a figure known as a patient’s “performance status.” There are a number of competing scales used to gauge this, but the scale sponsored by the World Health Organization goes from 0 to 5, with 1 and 4 being the general limits of description.

Mesothelioma Prognosis: Exceptions to the Statistics

As we said above, the statistical prognosis of mesothelioma is generally not in the patient’s favor. Seen only as a set of numbers, many people are understandably disheartened when they learn about their diagnosis. However, notable exceptions to these statistics do exist. Among the most famous of these exceptions was Dr. Stephen J. Gould of Harvard University. Dr. Gould was an internationally respected paleontologist and evolutionary biologist who conducted important research in both of these fields. Dr. Gould was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma in 1982. After an initial period of depression, motivated by all of the negative statistics he read regarding his diagnosis, he became determined to not let the statistics regarding life expectancy rob him of all hope. When he died in 2002, it was from another form of cancer, totally unrelated to his mesothelioma. Dr. Gould has written about his experience with peritoneal mesothelioma and his determination to not let simple statistics dictate his reaction to his diagnosis in the essay, “The Median Isn’t the Message.” We recommend Dr. Gould’s essay for everyone who has been diagnosed with this disease, or with any other form of cancer.

Dr. Gould’s experience certainly may not be standard, but his hopeful approach to his disease cannot be discounted.
Mesothelioma Prognosis: Conclusion

As you can see, there are a number of factors that can impact the determination of a mesothelioma prognosis. The biologic facts of the disease as presented and the individual characteristics of the patient are all important co-factors and have serious implications for overall prognosis. Along with these factors, improving treatment regimens are another major element in one’s prognosis. There is still no cure for mesothelioma, but the treatments are improving, as is our knowledge of the actual mechanisms of the disease itself. Doctors are hopeful that we can translate our growing knowledge of the disease into more effective treatments and, therefore, better prognoses for patients.

Despite the worldwide economic crisis, all is not doom and gloom for the region of Murcia, The good news recently released last week is that tourist numbers for the region continue to increase.

The Councilor for Culture and Tourism, has confirmed that the start of 2009 has seen a growing number of visitors to the Region of Murcia. Speaking at a recent conference for the tourist sector, he stated figures for the Region have once again increased, against the trend which has seen visitor numbers fall for the rest of Spain.

With the region having miles of wonderful coastline, the Mar Menor, historic cities and nature reserves, it seems that the pull for foreign visitors is strong. And whilst tourism in the “interior” or inland areas of the province in still in the early stages of development, there is no doubt that the mountains, parks and countryside also have an important part to play.

The challenge is to develop some of these areas as new destinations, whilst rejuvenating interest in the older favourites, such as La Manga and the Mar Menor.

A new plan aimed at increasing the competitiveness of the Mar Menor with respect to other tourist destinations is shortly to be put into operation, which will look at the infrastructure of the area. Sporting events and other activities such as sailing, beach activities and athletics will also be investigated to see how they can be more effectively promoted to tourists.

MYRTLE BEACH – Three months after surviving a completely different type of water hazard, Jeff Kolodjay and his golf buddies will finally get to hit the links in the “Golf Capital of the World,” courtesy of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday, Legends Resort, PGA TOUR Superstore and members of the Myrtle Beach golf community.
On January 15th, the US Airways flight headed for Charlotte hit a flock of birds, just three minutes after takeoff. The plane lost both engines and was forced to make an emergency landing in the Hudson River. Thanks to the quick thinking of Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, all 155 passengers survived but the luggage and golf clubs were lost. Kolodjay and his group were headed to Myrtle Beach for a five-day golf vacation but had to put the visit on hold.
Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday president Bill Golden learned of the crash while in an airport and instructed staff members to get in touch with Kolodjay and help them fulfill their visit to the Grand Strand area. Partnering with Legends Resort, PGA TOUR Superstore and members of the Myrtle Beach golf community, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday invited the golfers to come back to Myrtle Beach, whenever they were ready to fly again.
During their five-day visit, April 22 through April 26, the group will enjoy complimentary rounds of golf at three Legends Resort courses, True Blue Plantation, The Heritage Club, TPC of Myrtle Beach and Wild Wing Plantation. A three-bedroom condo was provided by Legends Resort and will serve as home during the visit. PGA TOUR Superstore will give each member of the group a $500 gift card, in addition to custom club-fitting.
The group consists of the Kolodjay family, and friends of the family; Jeff Kolodjay, the unofficial group spokesperson in the numerous national interviews and a resident of Norwalk, Connecticut; his father Rob Kolodjay, who lives in Chicopee, Massachusetts; cousin Jim Stefanik from Chicopee and Jeff’s college golf teammate at Central Connecticut State; Jorge Morgado, Jim’s brother-in-law and also a resident of Chicopee; Rick Delisle, a friend and former coworker of Rob’s in Chicopee; and Dave Carlos, a childhood friend of Jeff’s from Chicopee, and the only member not to have made any of the group’s annual golf trips to the Grand Strand area.
Although a few of the members have traveled by plane since January 15th, many still had reservations about boarding a plane to Myrtle Beach again. After a group meeting to discuss dates and plans, the group decided to travel together and make the 13-hour trip by car.

The debt-snowball method is a debt reduction strategy, whereby one who owes on more than one account pays off the accounts with the smaller balances first, proceeding to the larger ones later.

Overview
The debt-snowball method of debt repayment is a form of debt management that is most often applied to repaying revolving credit — such as credit cards. Under the method, extra cash is dedicated to paying debts with the smallest amount owed.

This method has gained more recognition recently due to the fact that it is the primary debt-reduction method taught by many financial and wealth experts. However, it has always existed, as people have a tendency to want to take care of smaller, easier-to-take-care-of things first.

Methodology
The basic steps in the debt snowball method are as follows:

List all debts in ascending order from smallest balance to largest.

This is the method's most distinctive feature, in that the order is determined by amount owed, not the rate of interest charged. However, if two debts are very close in amount owed, then the debt with the higher interest rate would be moved above in the list.

Commit to pay the minimum payment on every debt.

Determine how much extra can be applied towards the smallest debt.

Pay the minimum payment plus the extra amount towards that smallest debt until it is paid off.
Note that some lenders will apply extra amounts towards the next payment; in order for the method to work the lenders need to be contacted and told that extra payments are to go directly toward principal reduction.

Once a debt is paid in full, add the old minimum payment (plus any extra amount available) from the first debt to the minimum payment on the second smallest debt, and apply the new sum to repaying the second smallest debt.

Repeat until all debts are paid in full.

In theory, by the time the final debts are reached, the extra amount paid toward the larger debts will grow quickly, similar to a snowball rolling downhill gathering more snow (thus the name).

The theory works as much on human psychology as it does on financial principles; by paying the smaller debts first, the individual, couple, or family sees fewer bills as more individual debts are paid off, thus giving ongoing positive feedback on their progress towards eliminating their debt.

A first home mortgage is not generally included in the debt snowball, but is instead paid off as part of one's larger financial plan. As an example, many financial plans pay off home mortgages in a later step, along with any other debt which is equal to or greater than half of one's annual take-home pay.

The issue of whether one should make retirement contributions during the debt reduction process is a matter of dispute among proponents of this method:

Some argue that all contributions are to be halted during the debt snowball, thus freeing up more money to pay down the debt snowball.

Others dispute this practice, citing the cost of compounding interest to be greater than the gains of paying off debt.

Some compromise by arguing that retirement contributions should be reduced to only the minimum amount that the employer will match with an employee, but not eliminated completely.

Many financial and wealth experts teach that this halting of retirement contributions should last no more than two years.

Simple Example
An example of the debt-snowball method in action is shown below.
A person has the following amounts of debt and additional funds available to pay debt (the debt is listed with the smallest balance first, as recommended by the method):
Credit Card A - $250 balance - $25/month minimum
Credit Card B - $500 balance - $26/month minimum
Car Payment - $2500 balance - $150/month minimum
Loan - $5000 balance - $200/month minimum

The person has an additional $100/month which can be devoted to repayment of debt.
Under the debt-snowball method, payments for the first two months would be made to debtors as follows:
Credit Card A - $125 ($25/month minimum + $100 additional available)
Credit Card B - $26/month minimum
Car Payment - $150/month minimum
Loan - $200/month minimum

After two months (presuming the person has not added to the balances, which would defeat the purpose of debt reduction), Credit Card A would be paid in full, and the remaining balances as follows:
Credit Card B - $448
Car Payment - $2200
Loan - $4600

The person would then take the $125 previously used to pay off Credit Card A and apply it as additional payment to the Credit Card B balance, which would make payments for the next three months as follows:
Credit Card B - $151 ($26/month minimum + $125 additional available)
Car Payment - $150/month minimum
Loan - $200/month minimum

After three months Credit Card B would be paid in full (the final payment would be $146), and the remaining balances would be as follows:
Car Payment - $1750
Loan - $4000

The person would then take the $151 previously used to pay off Credit Card B and apply it as additional payment to the car loan balance, which would make payments as follows:
Car Payment - $301 ($150/month minimum + $151 additional available)
Loan - $200/month minimum

It would take six months to pay the car loan (the final payment being $245), whereupon the person would then make payments of $501/month toward the loan (which would have a $2800 balance) for six months (with the last payment at $295).

Thus in 15 months the person has repaid four loans, with two of them being paid in a mere five months and three within one year.

Benefits
The primary benefit of the smallest-balance plan is the psychological benefit of seeing results sooner. A secondary benefit of the smallest-balance plan is the reduction of total amount owed to lenders in a single month. This is a risk reduction in the event of a lost job or emergency.

Criticism
People with more financial discipline can get ahead quicker by paying off the credit cards and loans with the higher interest rates first. This will minimize costs to become debt-free faster than the smallest-balance approach. Dave Ramsey, a proponent of the debt-snowball method, concedes that "the math" leans toward paying the highest interest debt first; however, based on his experience, Ramsey states that personal finance is "20 percent head knowledge and 80 percent behavior" and that people trying to reduce debt need "quick wins" in order to remain motivated toward debt reduction.

The Debt-Snowball method is only for those on high enough incomes to be able to meet all the minimum repayment requirements on their debts. This method could instead lead to problems for those who are struggling to meet these minimum payments demands. In this circumstance, an individual should not be advised to pay creditors differing amounts as this could count as non-equitable repayment, leading to problems (e.g. with going bankrupt, or with maintaining non-equitable repayments over longer periods).

Chris here... We've had numerous people ask us about our food sealer. We are using a Rival Seal-A-Meal and it seems to be working well, but time will tell. It was the cheapest one at Target. We looked at all of them there, and since we couldn’t really tell whether the $150 sealer and the $50 sealer would actually work differently, we went with the cheaper one. The bags were also half the price of the other units. The only thing we’ve had poor luck sealing is pasta. We put the pasta in the bag and hit the vacuum button, and proceeded to watch all of our pasta crack and crumble. Then, to top off the destruction of all of our pasta, the sharp corners of what was left poked pinholes in the bags and let all the air in. Long story short, pasta doesn’t seem to work so well in a food sealer if it's single bagged. Non-toasted coconut that was still damp was an issue - it wouldn't seal - maybe the oils? Fresh baked chocolate chip cookies got completely squished into a large cookie mass, but that could be chubby to eat.

We also have found that it's easier as a two person operation with this unit - one to hold the bag, and one to push on the sealing lid. We don't know if the other units are any better, but we can't see them being that much better. You can do it by yourself, but it's easier with two people. It takes a little practice to learn how large to make the bags.

As I typed this, I learned something. Some vacuum sealers have the ability to stop the vacuum portion of the process before it's finished. This would enable you to move right to sealing the bag if you start crushing something. We'd recommend finding a sealer with this feature.
